May 26, (year confidential)

Today… on this day… during an undisclosed year… my best friend in the whole wide world was born!

She’s the first person I run to (or skype to, I should re-phrase) when I need ANYTHING: love, comfort, advise, stress release, family news, encouragement, and to just plain talk.

She’s MY MOM!

She wasn’t always my best friend, in fact, we’ve had our ups and down (enter teenage years); but when I finally grew up and realized what a jewel I had in my midst it all changed.  Now we love spending time together (when I’m home on furlough) doing mother-daughter things and also friend-friend things.

This past home visit my mom lost her mom.  Though it was extremely difficult for all of us, and I was also losing my grandma, I think the hardest part of it for me was seeing my mom lose her mom.  She is the only girl with 4 brothers, and I know she had a very close relationship with her mom, just like I have with her.  My mom and my grandma share so many amazing qualities, but most importantly they are STRONG WOMEN OF GOD and they love they families with the same love that God loves us: UNCONDITIONALLY.

One day I pray and hope that I will be a mom too, and when that day comes I want to be a mom just like mine. I want to instill in my children all the morals and values that she imparted in us.  I want to make her proud to be not only my mom, but my best friend.

I LOVE YOU MOM!!! Though I’m not there to see you blow out your (undisclosed number) of candles, you know that I’m sending you a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY hug your way….

our favorite pastime when I was a child 🙂

Show my mom some birthday love today….. 🙂

Birthday Bliss

This past weekend I turned 36 (though if anyone asks me, I’m still 35!) 🙂

I was so blessed to have some wonderful moments:

A friend gave me a full-day at a spa up in Tiberias, right on the Sea of Galilee…. fantastic!

Cotton Candy on the Boardwalk 🙂

My annual picture with the T-Rex!

VIP Movie Night at Cinema City… I don’t think I can watch a movie in the “regular” section ever again! LOL

Dead Sea and Ein Gedi to top off the weekend!

35.

I’ve been writing a birthday blog since I started blogging and when I sat down to write it this year, I could only really dwell upon all the things I haven’t accomplished yet.  I thought by my 35th birthday I’d be married, have kids, salaried job, and settled down.  35 was always my ‘goal’ year….

Yet here I am… 35… and none of those things have happened.

THEN I remembered one birthday, down in Rio, and I began to think about all the things I have accomplished, things that were never on my list to begin with.  I thought of where I’d been and who I’ve been with.  All the people who have been a part of my 35 years, near and far.  I have been sooooooo very blessed these past 35 years, no matter what hasn’t happened.

So just for kicks, I’ve put together a list of all the places I’ve spent my birthdays.  I might not have accomplished my list YET, but I’ve sure had some fun in the meantime…..

  • New York
  • Minnesota
  • Michigan
  • Florida
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Mexico
  • Canada
  • Brasil
  • Botswana
  • Namibia
  • South Africa
  • Israel

Can’t wait to see where next will be….

Reflections at 34…

Last year I was enjoying a fine-dining dinner of KFC, thanks to the generosity of Thrive Africa staff in South Africa. The year before that…in the bush of Botswana (sadly, no KFC or anything else remotely close).

Another year, another birthday, another country.

This year I am 34!

I tend to look at birthdays in a negative light, don’t ask me why.  I guess its the getting older part that doesn’t suit me too well, and unfortunately I have this ‘glass half empty’ attitude when it comes to this day.  I think things like…

‘No husband, no kids, no house with the picket fence, no dog….’ etc.

I do it every year, and every year I end up a tinge bit disappointed.  But this year I am vowing to look at it from the ‘glass half full’ attitude (or at least I’m going to attempt to).  Instead of thinking of the things I don’t YET have, I am going to make a list of the things I have been incredibly blessed to experience throughout my 34 years on this earth.  I’m turning over a new birthday leaf.

As we say in Hebrew…. la chaim! (to life!)

Happy Birthday, Sis!!!

Today is Feb. 1st, my sister, Kristy’s birthday!  I won’t say how old she is in respect to her (and to me, since I’m her older sister) hehehe.  In honor of this fabulous day, I’m gonna tell you some of the things that make her an amazing woman.

1. She has the most giving heart of anyone I know.  She doesn’t take, but gives, and does it out of love.

2. This quality spills over to Micheal, her son (my nephew).  I’ve never met any child who has such a generous and giving spirit, and that says so much about her as a mom.

3. She is a single parent and does an amazing job!  I know its difficult for her, and she wouldn’t say this herself…so I have to say it for her:  She is a great mom!!!!!

4. She loves her family!  Even through all the problems and issues we’ve gone through together as a family, she never gives up on any of us (especially with my little brother and sister).

5. All this being said, she is one of my biggest and most loyal supporters.  Every month she gives me more than I deserve to get in financial support.  She is a single mother, working full-time, with a middle-school child, yet she manages to faithfully support me…above and beyond what most supporters give.  She puts many people to shame!

6. She is now addicted to 24, and I cheerfully take full credit for that 🙂  We now both love Jack Bauer.

Kristy:  I love you and miss you tremendously!!!  May this day and new year bring more blessings to you than you ever dreamed of.  Seek God with all your heart each and everyday.  Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and let new people in….you’ll be blessed if you do.  Now go out and celebrate your birthday, even if I’m not there to do it with you. 🙂 Love you!!!!!
